Sonoma CALM is a group of citizens representing diverse neighborhoods in Sonoma Valley. Many of us have lived in Sonoma for decades. We came together to find a solution to the proliferation of gas-powered leaf blowers and the damaging effects of these machines on public health, the environment, and our quality of life. In just a few months, we collected more than 800 signatures supporting a ban on leaf blowers and we continue to work to educate the public on the dangers of fine particulate matter, emissions from two-stroke engines, noise pollution, desiccation of soils, and destruction of habitat for pollinators and wildlife, as we move our community towards more ecologically friendly landscaping practices.
Last fall the Sonoma Valley Unified School District removed all gas-powered leaf blowers from the maintenance equipment on all campuses and agreed not to use electric leaf blowers unless there was no other tool for the job, and never when children were present.
After over five years of working towards a ban, on March 21, 2016 the Sonoma City Council adopted an ordinance that bans all gas-powered leaf blowers and limits hours of operation from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. for electric and battery-powered leaf blowers in Sonoma city limits under our local noise ordinance. The ordinance was to go into effect on July 1, 2016, but due to a citizens’ referendum, will be on the November ballot.
Vote YES ON MEASURE V to uphold the ordinance.
